The Maktaba branch at Urdu Bazaar in old Delhi is one of the oldest and has served generations of Urdu writers and lovers. I registered a protest against the closure of iconic Maktaba’s old Delhi branch through FB post which subsequently went to my blog

Remembering Syed Ahmad, eminent economist and Urdu lover

October 30 is the first death anniversary of noted economist, former head and chairman of the Department of Economics at McMaster University, Canada, Prof Syed Ahmad. An alumnus of Jamia Millia, Patna University, Aligarh Muslim University and London School of Economics, Ahmad taught at universities in Aligarh, Khartoum (Sudan), Kent (England) and McMaster (Canada), was visiting professor at many other institutions and has left a legion of students and admirers across the globe.

Tales of two Historical Mosques and one Mission: Education.

This is a historical Mosque in many manners and it has a connection with Akbarabadi Mosque Delhi.

Azizunnisa Begum was the wife of Shahjahan he was known as Akbarabadi Begum because of her native Akabarabad (Agra) he built a mosque at Faiz Bazaar Delhi. ( Now Daryaganj). the later mosque was demolished by Britishers during the revolt of 1857.

When Sheikh Abdullah (Papa Mian) wrote poem for his daughter, Khurshid Jahan

Sheikh Abdullah, founder of Women’s College in Aligarh, and Begum Waheed Jahan had seven children, five daughters and two sons. Begum Khurshid Jahan, born in 1918, was the youngest daughter.

When she was a kid, there was a rumour that beggars with long beards kidnapped the children and would sell them away. Therefore, Begum Khurshid, when four year old, used to get terrified at the mere sight of any man with a long beard.
