Hakim Ajmal Khan: A Leader at the Helm of Multiple Diverse Organizations

Hakim Ajmal Khan is credited for the revival of Unani medicine in India in the early 20th century, by founding the Tibbia College in Delhi and also spotting Dr. Salimuzzaman Siddiqi, a chemist, whose subsequent research in important medicinal plants used in Unani Medicine gave it a new direction.

Mohammad Ajmal Khan better known as Hakim Ajmal Khan was a famous physician in Delhi, India and one of the founders of the Jamia Millia Islamia University. He also founded another institution, Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia (medical) College better known as Tibbia College situated in Karol Bagh, Delhi. He became the university’s first chancellor in 1920 and remained in office until his death in 1927.

A close associate of Gandhi, he participated in the Non-cooperation movement (Satyagraha); led the Khilafat Movement, and also became the President of the Indian National Congress, of whose he presided Ahmedabad Session in 1921.

3. Kaiser-i- Hind (a King without a crown) in 1915 for his contribution to the science of medicine.
